Bi-racial marriage
Well I wanted to write about the me and my family. I meet my wife fifteen years ago in Middletown Oh. We meet a church of all places the year was 1993 Which in hind site dont seem that long ago. I had just moved there from Durham N.C. and was new to the area. She was nice enough to show me around which into lead to us dateing and getting married. Now you might ask what dose this have to do with Bi-racial married. Well I am a white male and my wife is a black woman.. We where lucky in that both of our families where supportive of our releationship. We work through alot of troubles in the eariler years. We where turned away from renting house, and apartments. Which many would say that illegle why not turn them in. We thought this to at first, but how would you feel about getting a place cause you sued the owner. So we just left it alone. Also the stairs we would get just walking at the local stores which in our mind we thought all this was over in the 60's. As to our amazement there where still people out there that did not understand that two people could just fall in love. We did not look at each skin color and gladly neither of us where raised to only date in our race. When I first saw my wife even before we spoke I know she was special. She was what I was looking for. Now move up to the year 1998 and we moved from Oh. to Seymour In. for a better job. Now Seymour is alot smaller then what we are use to so the looks where even more annoying to put it nicely. We find a apartment ok but when it comes time to get a bank account of all things we where turned down. You might say well there is many reason to be denied a bank account and I would agree. Not the fact is we where denied while we walked in the door. Not after we filled out an applacation. After much trile and tribulation we got settled in. Now all this being said I would like to say this to younger couples going through or thinking about dateing out side there race. Go with your heart and your heart alone Ive been married 15 years and loved every min. of it. You cant change what others think no matter how hard you try. All you can do is be possitve dont let them get to you. Do what makes you feel good and makes you happy. When they say things like well it will be ok till you have kids remember this. Kids will be kids and everyone gets picked on as long as you instill into your kids that they have loveing parents that just happen to be of differant races and they have the best of both.. My kids range from 4-14 and have seen abd been through alot. I would say it is getting better but there is still those people out there that in my opinon just dont have a clue. |
